The soccer world is still mourning the sudden murder of
yet another celebrity in South
Africa.
Usually, all over the world, talented celebrities are
kept out of harms way even by the society’s hardened criminals, but things
appear to be different in South
Africa.

Meyiwa and Khumalo hours before the incident |
It could be recalled that music lovers are yet to recover
from the assassination of the sonorous voiced of Lucky Dube, a revered reggae
icon, who was mindlessly murdered by the same so-called ‘gunmen’ in his
homeland of South Africa. Africa has been
unable to replace this music legend and his recorded songs continue to preach
against the same evils.
Then just recently, Oscar Pistorius, an athletic star who
was yet thrilling the world with his awing abilities to convert his handicap
situation into inspiring those with full capacity, in a twist of fate was
engaged in a homicide case which saw him convicted by a South African Court. We should also bear
in mind that he had claimed that he shot dead Reeva Steenkamp, his girlfriend,
spending the night in the same house with him because he thought she was a
burglar who had come to rob him.
While we are yet recovering from the shock, another
brutal murder of a young celebrity has been recorded.
The question on every lip is why? Why does South Africa murder its own
celebrities? Accepted that the crime rate in South Africa is just as bad as
other African countries, don’t this class of people possess enough money to put
adequate security measures around their selves?
Sad as it sounds, this is the sad end of SENZO MEYIWA
The South African footballer Captain Senzo Meyiwa was shot in the chest, Police said, while he was
protecting his on-off girlfriend Kelly Khumalo, a South African pop star.
The 27-year-old played in a match for his side the Orlando Pirates last
night.
South
African Police Service said two men entered his girlfriend's house around 8pm
local time, while a third man remained outside.
‘The gang arrived demanding Meyiwa's mobile phone, money and other valuables,' provincial Community Safety official Sizakele
Nkosi-Malubane told reporters at the scene.
‘All three fled after shots were fired, in reported attempted burglary’
Meyiwa,
who played for Orlando Pirates, the previous day captained his side as they
advanced to the semi-finals of the South African League Cup, defeating Ajax
Cape Town 4-1. But that night as the
attackers pointed a gun at Miss Khumalo, Meyiwa caught a bullet instead of his
usual tactical goalkeeping.
Police
say they will bring his killers to book. But we know in essence, that never
resurrects the murdered ones.
This
is one murder too many and it is time South Africa did something about
its crime rate. May the family, friends and fans be comforted at the loss.
